Getting to Andorra by train (+ bus)
Although Andorra does not have its own train station, combining rail and bus travel is an excellent alternative for those who prefer the comfort of the train or are travelling from a long distance.
Here are the best routes to reach the Principality by rail, connecting with bus services that will drop you off in the centre of the country.
1. From Spain: High-Speed Rail to Lleida PirineusFor those coming from Madrid or Southern Spain, the fastest and most efficient option is the AVE or AVLO (high-speed rail). The journey from Madrid takes about 2 hours, and from Barcelona, just under an hour. Upon exiting the railway station, you will find the bus stop for coaches heading directly to the Andorra National Bus Station.
- Operators: Andbus, ALSA and HIFE.
- Frequency: Very high (buses run almost every 2 hours).
L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre station is located just 11 km from the border (Pas de la Casa). You can take a regional train from Toulouse Matabiau (approx. 2h 15m) or even the direct overnight sleeper train from Paris Austerlitz, which is a practical way to save time on your holiday.
From the station itself, the coach company HIFE operates a line connecting to Andorra la Vella, where you can then catch the L5 local bus that stops right outside the hostel.
- Operator: HIFE.
- Frequency: Bus schedules are usually synchronised with SNCF train arrivals, but it is advisable to book in advance.
