In just a few kilometers, you can go from a flat, educational trail—ideal for stretching your legs with the family—to demanding high-mountain routes that put your endurance to the test. Furthermore, the country has an impeccable network of guarded and unguarded mountain huts, long-distance trails (such as the GRP or the GR11), and excellent signage that allows you to venture into the wildest parts of the Pyrenees with total safety. It is not for nothing that Andorra is a true paradise for mountaineering enthusiasts.

Arinsal and La Massana: Your base of operations to touch the sky
For those of us looking to make the most of the mountains without wasting time on transfers, the Arinsal valley and the parish of La Massana are the perfect starting point. From the doors of KY Mountain Hostel Arinsal, you have immediate access to some of the most spectacular trails in the country. You don't need a car; just step out, take a deep breath, and start climbing.
To make it easy for you to plan your hiking days in Andorra, we have selected some routes in the area organized by their level of physical and technical difficulty:
Comapedrosa Interpretative Trail
Circular route, ideal for families, which travels along the communal paths of Arinsal marked with yellow dots. Starting at the Comapedrosa car park, the itinerary proceeds along the path of the Font del Riu Pollós, an area with educational signs about flora and fauna where water is usually the main feature. The great attraction of the walk is the junction that leads directly to the Massa tamarro. The return is made comfortably by combining a forest track with a rest area and the Arinsal slopes themselves.
Pla de l'Estany Refuge
Linear route connecting the Comapedrosa car park with the Pla de l'Estany Refuge, following sections of the GR11 and local trails marked with yellow dots. The ascent passes through the forest to the Coruvilla cabins before opening up into a spectacular plain with views of Port Dret. Upon reaching the refuge, you will find a water fountain, which is key for hydration as the high area lacks vegetation and the sun beats down strongly in summer. For the descent, you can return along the same path or take a different route using the Rec de l'Areny forest track.
Alt de Comapedrosa
Linear route that takes you directly to the roof of Andorra (2,942 meters) following the markings of the GR11, the GRP, and yellow dots. Starting from the Comapedrosa parking lot, the ascent passes by its guarded mountain hut and borders the iconic Estany Negre, where there may be snow depending on the season. The final section is high mountain terrain: a demanding, steep, and technical scree slope that requires good preparation. Since it is unprotected from the sun, it is key to protect yourself from radiation. For the descent, you return along the same path, taking advantage of the hut to rest.KY Mountain Hostel Arinsal: the refuge for the hiking community
At KY Mountain Hostel Arinsal, we are clear that the mountains are enjoyed twice as much when shared. Our common area is the heart of the hostel. Upon returning from an intense day of trekking in Andorra, there is nothing like taking off your boots, opening a good beer, and sitting down to chat. It is the perfect moment to share photos of the day, exchange GPS tracks, warn others if there is still snow on the high peaks, or plan a group route for the next morning. If you are traveling alone, this is the ideal place to find fellow hikers in a completely natural way. Additionally, we have a comfortable space to check your gear, prepare maps, and get your backpacks ready so that your only concern upon waking up is enjoying the trail.
- What is the best time for trekking in Andorra?The hiking season in Andorra starts strongly in mid-June, when the snow completely clears from the high passes and glacial lakes, and lasts well into October. Autumn here is especially spectacular thanks to the changing colors of the birch and black pine forests.
- Are the trails well marked?Yes, the trail network is very well maintained. You will find paint markings (yellow for local routes, white and red for GR) and signposts at the main junctions. Even so, for demanding high-mountain routes, we always recommend carrying the downloaded track on your mobile phone or mountain watch.
- What basic equipment must I have in my backpack?The weather in the Pyrenees can change in a matter of minutes. Even in the middle of July, it is essential to pack footwear with good grip, a windbreaker/waterproof jacket, sun protection, enough water, and a headlamp in case the day runs long. At the Hostel, we always check the local weather forecast before heading out and will help you check if you have everything you need.
- What options are there if I am traveling alone?Andorra is a very safe destination and the format of our hostel in Arinsal is designed precisely for that. It is incredibly easy to integrate, meet other hikers in the common areas in the afternoon, and be able to find company for an excursion the next day.
- If we will be lodging as a group of friends but each of us makes their own booking, can we all be placed together in the same room? You sure can! Just remember to reserve the same type of bed, but it will depend on availability. If you are a group of friends and you want to be together in the same room, the best thing to do is to contact us directly at info@kyhostel.com and we'll do everything possible to arrange things in accordance with your wishes.
- Are towels and sheets included? Towels, sheets and duvets are included in the price of the bed or room. Extra towels are available for a surcharge of 2€ per towel.
- Are dogs allowed at the hostel?Dogs of up to 20 kg in weight are allowed. Your pet can stay with you if you are in a private room, that is to say, if the room is booked by a family or a group of friends. Pets are allowed in the common areas but they should always be kept on a leash or in a transport carrier. On making your booking, remember to add the comment that you are coming with your pet. There is a surcharge of 12 € a night for pets.
On arriving at the hostel, you should display your pet's health certificate stating its vaccinations, and the insurance documents required by the pertinent regulations at all times. If you are travelling from abroad, you should also display your pet's European Pet Passport.
Guide dogs for the blind are allowed everywhere in the hostel.
